Sustainability in Business

Nashwhite, The Heist House

What does sustainability mean for everyday business?

Sustainability has firmly made the move from novelty to necessity. According to an IBM survey, 67% of job seekers are more willing to apply for roles at companies they find to be environmentally sustainable. Similarly, a report by Totaljobs found that over three in five (62%) employers have noticed an increase in sustainability-related questions from candidates during interviews. These numbers shine a light on how placing greater emphasis on your sustainability — whilst being good for the planet — is a powerful tool to attract the right talent.

Sustainability tends to evoke the subject of environmental responsibility, but it’s actually an umbrella term that encompasses much more.

Environmental stewardship — reducing carbon footprints, minimising waste, and protecting natural resources — is a cornerstone of sustainability, but its scope extends far beyond the environment. True sustainability addresses the well-being and development of workers, ensuring fair wages, safe working conditions, and opportunities for growth. It also involves strong governance practices, such as ethical decision-making, transparency, and accountability in business operations.

Sustainability also refers to the relationships businesses build with their communities, such as supporting local economies, contributing to social causes, and engaging in philanthropy. Finally, it prioritises clients/customers/consumers by delivering products and services that align with their values, often focusing on ethical sourcing, quality, and long-term satisfaction.

As a whole, sustainability communicates the balancing of economic success with positive social and environmental impact, creating value not just for shareholders, but for all stakeholders.

When it came to establishing a business in an industry often criticised for its impact on sustainability, we knew we wanted to do things differently. From inception, Nashwhite was built on unconventional ideas. While we have a passion for hair, we also pride ourselves on innovation — with our ultimate goal being to redefine what it means to be a ‘hair salon’.

At the heart of our business philosophy lies an unwavering dedication to sustainability, evident in every facet of our operations. From the design of our workplace to the products we use and the brands we partner with, our mission is to empower the people and protect the planet while crafting exceptional hair experiences. We plan on sharing our sustainable strides for the scrutiny of all—we promise! Because with sustainability, comes transparency.
